DIFFERENT UNDERLAYS, A CAP LINER OR A TOPPER

The waterbed can be the most hygienic bed system with proper maintenance. This bed hygiene is partly determined by the underlay, which covers the water mattress. Between the water mattress and the body, there are only the underlay and a fitted sheet. During a night, each person can release up to 2 liters of body moisture. This amount of moisture mainly needs to be absorbed by the underlay. A good underlay is capable of quickly distributing this amount of moisture over the largest possible surface area, allowing release to the environment. This absorption, distribution, and release of moisture are important functions of an underlay. If moisture cannot be distributed, it can cause cold spots, making the waterbed uncomfortable. Additionally, mold stains may occur if moisture is present in the underlay for too long. A good underlay is therefore essential for a waterbed.

Once moisture is released to the environment, salt crystals and skin flakes remain in the underlay. These penetrate through the fabric of the underlay and eventually end up on the vinyl of the water mattress. Many experienced waterbed sleepers recognize a kind of residue present on the water mattress when the underlay is removed for washing.

If these skin flakes are not removed or cannot be removed, they become a welcome breeding ground for dust mites and other organisms. In many conventional sleeping systems, the amount of skin flakes accumulates during the lifespan of the mattress to a quantity of up to 2 kilograms. This creates a paradise for dust mites and other organisms.

The major advantage of a waterbed is that the underlay can be cleaned. Additionally, the skin flakes on the vinyl of the water mattress can be removed, thereby creating a clean and hygienic sleeping environment. With virtually no conventional mattress, it is possible to consistently return the hygiene level to its original state. With a waterbed, this can be done without much effort, time and time again.

To reduce the frequency of cleaning the vinyl of the water mattress, it is possible to add an extra layer between the underlay and the water mattress. This layer, called the Capliner, collects skin flakes and salt crystals, making them easier to remove.
